Drum lessons with Tom

Drum Teacher Brighton

Whether you’re a complete beginner or someone looking to develop further as a drummer, I will help you get to the next stage!

If you’re not sure what you would like to begin with, then we will start by looking at the material within the grades, as this gives a decent overview of a wide variety of techniques, styles and exercises. I feel that you can’t really go wrong with this, and it will equip you with a lot of useful tools and knowledge as a drummer.

If after a while you start feeling inclined towards a particular style of music and you would prefer to focus on this, then we will look at this in greater depth and I will help you work towards developing in this area. I believe that enjoying what you do as a drummer is very important, and if you are keen on a particular style of music, then I want to support your development with this and help you be the kind of drummer that you want to be!

Goals

Brighton Drum Lessons

Grades are very useful and important for framing progress and development and covering a wide
variety of techniques and styles, but I believe it’s also important to look at what you can do with
these skills and where this can potentially take you. The following is not a strict guide at all and the lines blur a lot, but it can give you an idea of what kind of goals you could have and what you could potentially aim for:

Early level - (approx. grades 1 – 3)

– Playing drums on your own for fun; many people do this as an outlet and for the sheer enjoyment of playing drums themselves with no pressure for anything else, and they have a great time doing so!

– Starting to play with other musicians at a similar stage of development for fun, playing simple covers or originals and doing gigs occasionally for the social aspect of music and enjoying it as a hobby.

Intermediate level (approx. grades 4 – 6)

– Playing in good quality covers or originals bands, and possibly gigging more extensively and further afield. There are lots of drummers in successful bands whose skill-level is at around this stage!

– Creative development as a drummer and starting to find your own voice on the drum kit; many people get to around this point and realise that there is a particular style that they are more drawn towards, and they start to focus on this rather than continuing with grades, which is fine!

– You could start considering the possibility of going on to further performance study at music colleges/universities if this interests you.

– It is somewhere around this point that you will have developed a reliable lifelong skill that you can use at any point, i.e., you can meet with other musicians and have fun playing in a band or project at any point of your life, and this is a great thing to be able to do!

Advanced (approx. grades 7-8)

– The capability to play in high quality groups in a wide variety of styles playing gigs wherever it takes you

– Specialisation in a particular style and developing your own unique voice as a drummer

– The possibility of studying at degree-level at renowned music institutions if this is something that interests you

– You could start considering working as a paid session drummer or teacher

Beyond

– Developing a full-time career as a professional drummer

– Becoming an expert in your chosen style and developing virtuosic abilities

– Becoming a renowned drummer in your own right where people come to you for your skills

– Overtaking me and teaching me new things (I’d be very happy if this happened!)
